Registered Nurse - School Nurse

Salary: $53,000 per year

Hope is a clinical, educational, and therapeutic provider for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder. SUMMARY

The School Nurse is a bargaining unit position that provides direct nursing services to students to maximize health and wellness in the school community at Hope Learning Academy Springfield, coordinating a school health program including the delivery of services to students and serving as a health resource to school staff.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Maintaining compliance as required by the Illinois School Code and Illinois Department of Public Health for physical examination and immunization records.
  • Determining the impact of students’ contagious illnesses and acting to prevent the spread of communicable diseases in the school setting.
  • Providing and/or delegating services including first aide care for ill students and emergency care to students and staff.
  • Screening for health problems that impact education.
  • Identifying and managing students’ health concerns and ensuring a safe school environment so they are ready to learn.
  • Acting as a liaison between home and school by communicating with RN Case Managers regarding students’ health and safety needs and developing plans to meet those needs at school.
  • Assisting students in accessing health care.
  • Providing needed health education in the classroom to help better prepare students for health issues affecting individuals in their age group and learning opportunities that promote individual and community health.
  • Administering and monitoring effectiveness of medications given at school.
  • Providing school staff with current information about students’ health concerns and care on a confidential need-to-know basis.
  • Participating as needed as a member of the multidisciplinary team that identifies, evaluates, and places students on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or in special education programs; writing health components of IEPs; assisting in the writing, assessing, and implementation of behavior plans; recommending modifications in school programs for students who require accommodations because of health concerns.
  • Completing and presenting health histories as part of case study evaluations.
  • Maintaining communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and families to enhance cooperative action to meet the health and safety needs of students.
  • Maintaining confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.
  • Monitoring monthly attendance.
  • Identifying resources and information about services in the community and providing these services to students and families.
  • Participating in health-related community activities as a representative of the school district.
  • Assumes responsibility as a mandated reporter concerning incidents or purported abuse/neglect of individuals served by Hope as outlines in the agency’s policies and procedures.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • Certified as a School Nurse in Illinois (or in process).
  • Certified as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Illinois.
  • Certification in audiometric and vision screening (or in process).
  • Certified in American Heart Association CPR and AED as trained at Hope.
